We’re experimenting with ways to reduce organic waste, and one of the tools we’ve been using is a mobile biodigester.
You may have seen it at events like Body & Soul 2023, where it was used to turn food waste into nutrient-rich compost. Unlike high-heat composting systems, this biodigester works at very low temperatures, using minimal energy to break down organic matter into usable soil.
However, it’s a sensitive system and doesn’t handle mistakes well. Hard objects, plastic, or cutlery accidentally thrown in can disrupt the process or damage the machine, which means careful sorting is essential. Because of this, it hasn’t been easy to use at large events but every trial teaches us more about how to manage it.
Looking ahead, we’re hoping to make better use of the biodigester, learning from each experience and showing how even low-energy, small-scale composting can be part of a circular, zero-waste approach.
It’s not perfect but it’s a step toward turning organic waste into something useful, rather than letting it go to landfill.
