We’re exploring innovative ways to recycle nutrients and close the loop and one of our most exciting initiatives is the Struvite Phosphorous Project.
Last summer, we brought the project to Éalú le Grá Festival 2025, where we demonstrated how urine can be recycled to create struvite, a natural fertiliser that is safe for use in food production. In 2023, we also brought the project to Body & Soul, and festival-goers were fascinated, asking lots of questions and learning how human waste can be transformed into a valuable resource for growing food. By using struvite, we can reduce the need for damaging synthetic fertilisers, which cause nutrient overload in rivers and streams, leading to fish deaths and other environmental concerns, and eventually polluting our oceans.
The project is led by Ollan Herr, who has also been working with community groups around Ireland to implement this approach on a local scale. By engaging with communities, we’re showing practical ways to recover phosphorus and promote sustainable agriculture.
This is just the beginning, stay tuned as we continue to develop the project and bring it to more festivals and communities across Ireland in 2026!
